I've spent a lot money on junk for my kids, but this microscope is one the smartest purchases I've ever made. Under the microscope (light from bottom) we could see blood cells, and then with a flip of the switch, we turned on the macro-scope (light from top) and could see details of the harden outer cells.
The lenses are good for studying common environmental items you can find around your house. Construction is of sturdy metal and not the cheap plastic of many kids starter microscopes.
My wife and 9-yr daughter love this microscope. For example, we studied a scab.
This a great tool for getting your kids interested in science. I wish I could post the picture of my daughter with a big smile while working with it.
The duo-scope is awesome for looking at some things.
I would highly recommend this microscope for kids. This microscope is mostly metal (NOT PLASTIC) and the optics are way better than my previous purchase. I first bought the Celestron microscope w/ the digital camera for my son's birthday and returned it because it did not work very well (camera was all but unuseable). I ordered this one and am very happy.
We taught her how to set it up and we are always around when she uses it but she can use it with little help. It works well and seems very sturdy. My daughter asked for a microscope for her 8th birthday. I looked at cheaper scopes but we decided on this one because of the features. She will be able to use this for years. Her father is a microbiologist and she wants to be like her Daddy. It is a great scope.
My daughter tires of things very easily, but she absolutely loves this microscope and all her friends want to check it out. I would recommend getting some prepared slides sets though. The visual images are great and allow for three magnification levels. She uses it whenever she can. It comes with a bunch of tools, some of which a child would definitely need supervision with (a scalpel, glass test tube, petri dish just to name a few). I bought this microscope for my daughter's 9th birthday.
It is very sturdy and made of quality materials. It comes with a booklet that gives you tips and ideas as well (like growing mold). When I looked at the box it came in, I thought "hmmm, looks cheap". It comes with a couple prepared slides and some blank ones for you to make your own. Excellent product and value for the price.don't buy a cheap plastic one that will break in a week. What a surprise when she opened it.
What we really like is that there is a light that shines from the bottom, or one from the top (so you can better see the surfaces of things which is great for looking at everyday things around the house like leaves, flowers, dirt, or whatever).
I am currently growing mold with my petri dish and I can't wait to look at it under my new microscope. Looking a pond water was fun too. It was perfect. It came with prepared slides (very interesting), dies, a test tube, a medicine dropper, tweezers, blank slides, a concavity slide, slide labels, a cover glass, scalpel, forceps, lens paper, a petri dish, a straight teasing needle, and vinyl dust cover. I killed an insect to get its blood and put the blood on a slide. I am 12 years old and I love science.
I got it before the expected date and in very good condition. I could clearly see microorganisms. In particular, I love microbiology. It was still moving. The microscope is great for kids trying to learn about "the tiny world around them". It only took me a month of minimal working to earn enough money to by this microscope.
I could see individual cells on my finger.
